Description
Delicious and crispy mini blooming onions made in an air fryer, offering a healthier alternative to traditional fried snacks.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup Buttermilk (or milk with lemon juice)
- 1 cup Flour
- 1 tbsp Paprika
- 1 tsp Garlic Powder
- 1 tsp Onion Powder
- 0.5 tsp Cayenne Pepper
- 1 tsp Salt
- 1 tsp Pepper
- 2 medium Sweet Onions (like Vidalia)
- As needed Cooking Spray/Oil
Instructions
- Prepare the Onions: Peel the sweet onions and cut off the top and bottom to create a blooming effect by making 12-16 cuts from a half-inch above the base to just below the top. Gently separate the petals and set them aside.
- Marinate: Whisk together the buttermilk and a little salt in a bowl. Soak the prepared onions in this mixture for at least 30 minutes to an hour.
- Create the Coating: Mix flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper in a separate bowl.
- Coat the Onions: After marinating, allow excess buttermilk to drip off and dredge each onion in the flour mixture.
- Spray and Air Fry: Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Lightly coat the onions with cooking spray or oil and cook for 12-15 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through.
- Finish and Savor: Cook until golden brown and crispy. Let cool for a few minutes before serving warm.
Notes
Make-Ahead Tip: Marinate the onions overnight for deeper flavors. They can also be baked in the oven at 400°F (200°C) for 20-25 minutes.
