Description

A comforting dish of pasta enveloped in a rich tomato sauce with hearty Italian sausage, bright basil, and grated parmesan.


Ingredients

  • 1 lb Italian sausage
  • 12 oz pasta (penne, fettuccine, or spaghetti)
  • 24 oz tomato sauce
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 cup parmesan cheese (optional)
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cook the pasta: In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add your pasta of choice and cook according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  2. Heat the skillet: In a large skillet over medium heat, warm olive oil.
  3. Sauté aromatics: Add the diced onion and minced garlic. Sauté until translucent, about 2-3 minutes.
  4. Brown the sausage: Crumble the sausage into the pan. Stir occasionally until golden brown and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes.
  5. Add the sauce: Pour in the tomato sauce, stirring to coat the sausage. Lower the heat and simmer gently for about 10 minutes.
  6. Combine pasta and sauce: Toss the cooked pasta into the skillet, mixing well. Add reserved pasta water if needed.
  7. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
  8. Serve with parmesan and fresh basil on top.

Notes

For a lighter option, use turkey sausage. You can also add fresh vegetables for added nutrition.
